FORTH – the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (GR) is one of the largest research centres in Greece; it provides well – organised facilities and highly qualified staff. It functions under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Hellenic Ministry of Development and consists of seven Research Institutes, which are located in various regions of Greece: Heraklion, Rethymno, Patras and Ioannina. The Foundation’s headquarters, as well as the Central Administration offices are located in Heraklion, Crete. The research and technological focus of the foundation is centred on areas of great scientific, social, and economic interest, such as: Computer Science, Molecular Biology, Laser, Telecommunications, Microelectronics, Robotics, Biotechnology, Materials, Medical Engineering, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering and Historical Studies.
The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), with its high quality research results as well as its valuable socioeconomic contribution, makes it one of the top research centres around the world. The Regional Analysis Division (RAD) is the largest of the five divisions of the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics (IACM) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). FORTH is a public research center consisting of 6 different institutes. The headquarters of FORTH are located in Heraklion, in the island of Crete in Greece. Developing tools and methods aimed at assisting regional, urban and environmental planning is the main focus of the work carried out in RAD.
The division concentrates on the application of techniques ranging from geography, applied informatics, remote sensing, statistics, mathematics, operations research, city planning and economics to develop information and decision support systems that can be used by both the public and private sectors. The researchers of the division are specifically involved in: Applications of geographical information systems, spatial decision support systems, Web GIS, advanced travellers information systems, remote sensing applications, spatial statistical modelling, sustainable development assessment tools.
The division participates in research and development projects related to the design and development of “intelligent” information systems for statistical and environmental databases, collection and analysis of socio-economic data and development of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications for planning. These are funded by organizations such as the European Union (EU), the General Secretariat of Research and Technology of Greece (GSRT), the National Statistical Service of Greece (NSSG), the Regional Development Agency of Crete, NATO and others. EU funded research programs in which the division has participated include: DOSES, IMPACT II, ORA, ENVIRONMENT, INFO 2000, TELEMATICS, INCO-DC, IST and EUMEDIS. Additionally, several contracts from agencies such as the National Statistical Office of Greece, the Municipality of Heraklion, the Ministry of Health, the Athens Urban Transport Organization and others have been secured.
